4 die in Aurora landslide

A mother and her three children were killed after a landslide buried their house in Casiguran town in Aurora province Wednesday night.

Residents of some coastal villages in the town were also forcibly evacuated from their homes due to rising floods caused by heavy rain.

The remains of the mother, 42, and her children aged 5 to 11 were retrieved as of early Thursday morning, radio dzBB stringer Ronald Leander reported.

Only the patriarch of the family, initially identified as Pastor, survived the tragedy, the report said.

Wednesday night's landslide in San Ildefonso village came after heavy rain in the area, the report added.

The dzBB report also said the heavy rain had isolated Casiguran and nearby Dilasag towns in Aurora.

Earlier Thursday, PAGASA forecaster Alvin Pura said Aurora was among the areas that may experience heavy rain that may cause flash floods and landslides.

Forced evacuation

A separate report by dzBB's Carlo Mateo said the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council in Casiguran ordered the forced evacuation of residents in coastal areas.

The dzBB report said rain had been falling over Casiguran at 18 mm per hour, and floodwaters were rising. — RSJ, GMA News
