(Updated 3:05 p.m.) While cops may occasionally exempt government officials from traffic law violations, in Davao City, this is not the case.

Former Davao City mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio on Monday was flagged down by traffic enforcers for overspeeding, a television report said.

According to a report on GMA News' Unang Balita, the fierce former mayor was found to be driving at 57 kilometers per hour, violating the 40 kph-speed limit in the area.

Duterte-Carpio had her driver's license confiscated and was issued a ticket, it said.

On the same day, the former mayor paid for the fine and got her license back, the report added.

"Paglapit nila, pinara namin. Pagbukas ng pinto, si Ma'am Sara pala. Nagulat ako, ma'am," said the traffic enforcer in a report on GMA News TV's Balitanghali.

In 2011, Duterte-Carpio caught the international media's attention after she punched a court sheriff during a demolition row. She has issued a public apology almost a year after the incident.

In 2009, her father, the tough-talking Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, was also apprehended by authorities for not wearing the required protective helmet while riding his motorcycle, according to a report by The Philippine Star.

The report said the mayor, known for his tough anti-criminality efforts in his turf, admitted his mistake and surrendered his driver's license to the authorities.

He then had to pay a fine and was required to attend a driver's seminar before his license was released, it added.

Davao City has been noted for its low crime rate and high safety record under Rodrigo Duterte's leadership.

Meanwhile, in Quezon City, city mayor Herbert Bautista in 2011 was also apprehended by a traffic enforcer for beating the red light along Tomas Morato, according to a report.

The following day, during the city hall's flag raising ceremony, Bautista commended the traffic enforcer, Sol Botilla, and promoted him to supervisor and was given a reward of P10,000, it added. —Amanda Fernandez/KG, GMA News
