1 killed, 54 hurt as bus falls off bridge in Samar – report

At least one person was reported killed while 54 were injured after a bus fell off a bridge in Samar province in Eastern Visayas Tuesday night.

Tuesday night's accident occurred in Caibiga town in Samar, according to a report on Visayas-based Bombo Radyo on Wednesday.

The report initially identified the fatality as Ronna Quezon, 18, of Julita in Leyte.

Injured in the accident were 51 passengers, the bus' two drivers, and the conductor.

Of the injured, three remained at the Eastern Visayas Regional Medical Center (EVRMC) as of Wednesday morning, the report said.

An initial investigation showed the bus (TOE-465) owned by Super 5 was heading south from Metro Manila when it fell off the Balugo Bridge in San Sebastian in Calbiga, Samar at 8 p.m.

The report said the bus company shouldered the medical expenses of the injured.

Meanwhile, police are tracking down the drivers of the bus, who had been among those discharged early from the hospital.

Police investigators said they had to verify information that the drivers took part in a drinking spree while the bus was aboard a roll-on roll-off vessel. — LBG, GMA News
