Body of missing fisherman recovered off Cavite; death toll rises to two


(Updated 11:57 a.m.) The death toll in the collision of two vessels off Cavite early Thursday morning rose to two after a body of another fisherman was recovered, a television report said Friday.

A report on GMA News TV's News TV Live said another fisherman was rescued in Bataan, bringing the casualty count to two dead and eight missing. The first fatality was earlier identified as Jojo Sumbilla.
 
There were 23 fishermen on board MV Dan Israel when it was reportedly rammed by a cargo ship between the shores of Ternate, Cavite and Caballo Island in Bataan around 12:30 a.m. Thursday.

At the time of the incident, the fishermen were reportedly asleep.

The same the television report said search operations are ongoing for the eight other missing fishermen.

An earlier rpeort on GMA News TV's News To Go said the 12 fishermen who were earlier rescued by the Philippine Coast Guard have already returned to their homes after they were brought to the Naic Medical Center.
 
The same report said the owner of the cargo ship is still being determined by authorities. However, the rescued fishermen said the cargo ship was carrying blue containers, it added. — Amanda Fernandez/RSJ, GMA News
