Bomb threat forces San Beda College Rizal campus to suspend classes, office work
Classes in all levels at San Beda College campus in Taytay, Rizal, were canceled Friday morning following a bomb threat.
In a post on its Twitter account, radio dzBB said school officials announced the suspension of all activities in the campus on Friday.
Taytay Police Station's P03 Jerry Hernandez, in a phone interview with GMA News Online, said authorities are now investigating the situation. He, however, declined to give more details.
On the other hand, a school security officer, who refused to be named for lack of authority to speak, said parents and students have been notified of the cancellation of classes.
Recent campus bomb scares
Just last week, the Makati National High School suspended classes due to bomb threat.
Makati Police Explosives and Ordnance Division's SPO1 Felipe Flores said they received the report of the bomb threat early morning, and immediately responded and inspected the school "from room to room."
Last February, classes at the Ateneo de Manila University, University of Sto. Tomas, and St. Paul University campus in Pasig City were also disrupted due to bomb scares. Authorities have so far been facing a blank wall as to who were behind the false information.
A bill has been filed at the House of Representatives seeking stiffer penalties on people found guilty of spreading false bomb threats in high-density areas.
House Bill 4030, filed by Marikina Rep. Romero Quimbo, seeks to slap people found guilty of disseminating false information on the presence of bombs in schools, churches, malls and airports with up to a 12-year jail term, and a fine of up to P5 million.
Present punishments for such crime – based on Presidential Decree 1727 signed in 1980 by then President Ferdinand Marcos – are imprisonment of up to five years, and a fine of not more than P40,000. — Amanda Fernandez /LBG, GMA News
