Report: BFAR warns shellfish in parts of Pagasinan still positive for red tide toxin

Shellfish in some parts of Pangasinan province may not be safe to eat as they may still contain red tide toxin, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources said.

The BFAR said this includes shellfish and "alamang" (shrimps) from the Bolinao and Anda areas, state-run Philippines News Agency reported.

In Dagupan City, an anti-red tide task force formed by Mayor Belen Fernandez remains on alert to prevent the entry of shellfish from Bolinao and Anda.

The task force is also on alert for shellfish from Navotas, Malabon, Cavite and Bataan that might be brought to Dagupan, the PNA report added.

Citing BFAR's Shellfish Bulletin No. 8 dated April 1, the PNA said shellfish samples collected from Bolinao and Anda towns still contained red tide toxins.

It advised the public they will risk paralytic shellfish poisoning if they eat the shellfish from these areas.

However, the advisory does not cover shellfish from Sual, Lingayen, Binmaley, Dagupan City and San Fabian, and along the Lingayen Gulf. — Joel Locsin /LBG, GMA News
