Coast Guard builds search and rescue base in Roxas City, Capiz

The Philippine Coast Guard has broken ground on its first Search and Rescue base, which will rise in Roxas City in Capiz.

According to a "24 Oras" report aired Saturday, the PCG chose Roxas City because it is in the center of the country and because it is near an airport, hospitals, and several government offices.

The base, which will cost P211 million to build, is expected to be completed in a year.

Transportation Secretary Joseph Emilio Abaya and Interior Secretary Manuel Roxas II attended the groundbreaking ceremony on Saturday.

Roxas, after whose grandfather Roxas City was named, said the location of the SAR base is strategic.

"Tayo rito sa Capiz, sa northern Panay, coastal tayo. Masasabi natin na nasa sentro tayo ng mga sea lanes," he explained.  — JDS, GMA News
