Cavite man dies saving drowning child
A man died trying to save a drowning child in Cavite province on Good Friday, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said Saturday evening.
The NDRRMC, in its 6 p.m. Saturday update, said this brought to 20 the death toll from accidents recorded so far during the Holy Week.
The NDRRMC said Ignacio Delavida, 38, of Barangay Sapang 1 in Ternate, Cavite, drowned while trying to save a drowning child at Dalaroy Beach Resort in Barangay Bucana, Ternate, Cavite at 12:45 p.m. Friday.
While the child was saved, Delavida was declared dead on arrival at a hospital. Investigation also showed the victim was intoxicated at the time of the drowning.
It also said it recorded 14 vehicular accidents, one maritime incident, one incident of carbon monoxide poisoning, five fires and six drowning incidents.
In Quezon province, meanwhile, two were reported killed after drowning at Sitio Tabunan in Barangay Bignay 2 in Sariaya, Quezon at 1:15 p.m. Friday.
The NDRRMC identified the two fatalities as Romnick, 17; and Michael Maravilla, 21. Initial investigation showed both victims may have been under the influence of alcohol.
In Maragondon, Cavite, Harold Pablo, 34, drowned at 4 p.m. Friday at Patungan Beach in Barangay Sta. Mercedes.
In Tabuk City, Narciso Poblete, 30, went swimming after drinking bottles of alcohol at 3 p.m. Thursday and drowned
Meanwhile, the NDRRMC said a vehicular accident involving a Toyota RAV4 with five passengers occurred at Km 29+000 in Bocaue, Bulacan.
The vehicle was traveling 70 to 80kph when it went out of control and spun about 180 degrees, hitting the concrete median barrier. — Joel Locsin/JDS, GMA News
