3 arrested for illegal firearms in Laguna; gun ban on for Palarong Pambansa
At least three people were arrested in Laguna province for possession of illegal firearms, even as a gun ban is now in effect for the Palarong Pambansa (National Games) there.
The arrest of the three was part of the security measures, GMA News' Mav Gonzales reported on Wednesday.
Seized were various handguns, firearm accessories and ammunition.
Meanwhile, a gun ban went into effect in the province for the Palarong Pambansa. The games are scheduled from May 4 to 10, radio dzBB's Henry Herdillo reported.
This means permits to carry firearms outside residences are suspended, and only uniformed on-duty policemen and soldiers can carry firearms.
Earlier, the Department of Education said boxing at this year's Palarong Pambansa has been scrapped, at least in the elementary division.
Calls to ban boxing in schools mounted in December following the death of a 16-year-old student boxer who was hurt at a regional athletic meet in Zambales.
Luistro also said futsal, billiards, wushu and wrestling will remain demonstration sports, with winners getting medals but their victories not having any bearing on the standings.
Sipa in the elementary division shall be renamed Sepak Takraw Jr., while Sepak Takraw for girls shall be added to the high school division as a demonstration event. — Joel Locsin /LBG, GMA News
