PHL authorities arrest 7 aboard Vietnamese vessel for poaching off Zambales

Seven Vietnamese nationals were arrested after they were caught poaching off Zambales Monday, the Philippine Coast Guard said Wednesday.

A joint team of the Coast Guard and Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources apprehended the Vietnamese fishing vessel off Silanguin port in Subic in Zambales.

The Coast Guard, in a post on its Facebook page, identified the seven crew members of the Vietnamese fishing vessel as:

  1. Pham Minh Ouoc, 54, boat captain/owner
  2. Le Van Muoi, 31
  3. Nguyen Van Tu, 41
  4. Nguyen Binh, 40
  5. Ngo Van Tuan, 28
  6. Truong Van Luan, 25
  7. Nguyen Huynh Duc, 31, boat mechanic

Initial investigation showed the PCG-BFAR team sighted the "actual fishing operation and hauling of fishing gears" by the Vietnamese ship registered as "BD 96281 T5."

The vessel at the time was 16 nautical miles off the port of Silanguin in Subic, the Coast Guard said.

A joint PCG-BFAR team went to the vessel and inspected it.

It is not the first time Vietnamese nationals have been apprehended for poaching in Philippine waters.

In March, eleven suspected Vietnamese poachers have been arrested in Taytay town in Palawan with a haul of 50 dead sharks. Joel Locsin/KG, GMA News
