Pope Francis names new Bohol bishop

Pope Francis has appointed a Negros-born seminary rector as the new bishop of Talibon in Bohol, the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines said Wednesday.

The CBCP said the Pope named Fr. Daniel Patrick Parcon as bishop of Talibon to replace Bishop Christian Vicente Noel, who resigned after reaching age 75.

"Bishop Parcon held a number of pastoral roles, which included his being spiritual director and dean of studies at the St. John Mary Philosophy seminary in San Carlos City; parish administrator of the Ascension Church in Hurricane, West Virginia, U.S; and parish administrator of the Immaculate Conception Church at Liberty, Texas. He was also parish vicar at the Blessed Sacrament Church at Valley Stream, New York," the CBCP said on its news site.

He is presently the rector of the St. John Mari philosophy seminary in San Carlos City in Negros Occidental. Also, he chairs the San Carlos Diocese's Marriage and Family Life Apostolate.

On the other hand, the CBCP noted Noel had been appointed bishop of Talibon on September 6, 1986.

Citing data from the Vatican Information Service, the CBCP said Bishop-elect Parcon was born in Vallehermoso, Negros Oriental in 1962.

He was ordained in 1994 and holds Masters degrees from the St. Rita College, San Carlos City, Philippines and Fordham University in New York City. - Joel Locsin/NB, GMA News
