32 Batangas fishermen rescued after 9 days at sea

At least 32 fishermen from Batangas province spent nine days at sea before the Philippine Coast Guard rescued them off Pangasinan, state-run Philippines News Agency reported Wednesday.

The PNA report said the fishermen from Nasugbu, Batangas were aboard the fishing boat Rafael when they were found in the West Philippine Sea off Bolinao town in Pangasinan.

The fishermen were weak as they did not eat or drink for eight days.

They left Barangay Wawa in Nasugbu June 15 to go fishing in Mindoro, but the vessel's engine conked out, causing the fishermen to drift. A strong wind then blew the boat north.

The fishermen reached the waters off Bolinao when local fishermen saw them and alerted the Coast Guard there.

Following their rescue, the fishermen were placed under the care of the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.  — Joel Locsin/ELR, GMA News
