2nd most wanted man, follower killed in Zambo Norte clash
The second most wanted man in Zamboanga Peninsula was slain in an encounter with police and military forces last Thursday, a police report said on Sunday.
“Joint elements of Philippine National Police and Army units in Region IX conducted operations against Kidnap-for-Ransom Group Leader Jaojin Salam in Barangay San Roque, Gutalac, Zamboanga Del Norte, by virtue of arrest warrants for murders and frustrated murders,” a police report said.
One of Salam’s men was also killed in the encounter, it said, adding that Salam was killed when he resisted arrest, forcing police and military men to fire at him.
Also, the report said Salam led the group at attacked Siocon town on May 4, 2014. He was also the primary suspect in several kidnapping cases such as the 2009 kidnapping of three crew members of the M/T Marino vessel owned by Cebu Tug and Barge Inc.
Salam was also a suspect in the kidnapping of Mr. Donald Capili, a son of Filipino-Chinese businessman and Olivia Barredo Angeleson.
Capili was abducted on August 27, 2009 and was released in January 2010.
After the clash last Thursday, two M-14 rifles were recovered from the slain suspects, the police said. — Patricia Denise Chiu /LBG, GMA News
