Ships washed ashore by Yolanda still on land

Eight months after super Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) devastated the Visayas, several vessels it washed ashore are still on land.

In Tacloban City alone, nine out of 10 vessels have yet to be returned to sea, GMA Cebu's Nikko Sereno reported Thursday.

Salvaging operations are still ongoing for the vessels, with shipping companies contracting salvor firms for the job.

In some cases, rollers were placed under the beached vessels to move them to sea. In others, makeshift canals were dug so they can be guided back to the water.

Some vessels were also cannibalized.

On the other hand, crews said another problem involved the houses standing in the way of the vessels.

Meanwhile, the Coast Guard said there is no deadline for the salvaging work, saying what is important is to ensure the safety of residents.

The Coast Guard also said owners of the beached vessels have another option - to let their vessels stay as attractions. —Joel Locsin/NB, GMA News
