2 children killed in landslide in Rodriguez, Rizal

Two children were killed in a landslide that hit their home in a remote area in Rodriguez town in Rizal province before dawn Wednesday.

Initial information from the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office showed the incident occurred at 3:30 a.m., radio dzBB's Tuesday Niu reported.

Heavy rain had been falling on the area at Sitio Bambanin in Barangay San Isidro at the time, the report said.

While the report did not name the fatalities, it described one as six months old and the other as three years old.

Both children were rushed to the Casimiro Ynares Sr. Memorial Hospital but doctors could not save them.

The dzBB report quoted the PDRRMO as saying heavy rain had been falling on the area for one week, and that the rain was particularly heavy on Tuesday night.

It said the PDRRMO is not discounting the possibility that the rain saturated the ground on which the victims' house was standing.

For now, the PDRRMO is verifying if other families had been affected by the landslide. — Joel Locsin/RSJ, GMA News
