DOH probes Misamis food poisoning case

A Manila-based team from the Department of Health's National Epidemiology Center has started investigating a suspected case of food poisoning that downed more than 100 guests at a barangay anniversary in Medina town last Monday.

The team went to Barangay San Vicente in Medina town in Misamis Oriental and will talk to the victims, GMA Northern Mindanao reported over the weekend.

Members of the team are to take samples of the food to check for signs of salmonella. They will also get rectal swabs from the victims.

Salmonella bacteria are responsible for causing typhoid fever, diarrhea and gastrointestinal disease, according to the Department of Health.

Samples will be sent to the Food and Drug Administration laboratory in Davao City.

Meanwhile, the victims confined at the provincial hospital in Gingoog City are returning to their homes, with two still confined as of Saturday. — Joel Locsin /LBG, GMA News
