Radio station manager in Dagupan shot, wounded
(Updated 9:47 a.m.) A station manager of a local radio station in Dagupan City in northern Luzon was shot and wounded before dawn Tuesday.
Orly Navarro was hit in the lung after being shot by an unidentified man at about 1 a.m., radio dzBB reported.
Navarro is presently station manager of dwIZ 89.3 FM News, the dzBB report said.
Broadcaster Rey Langit, station manager of dwIZ's AM station in Manila, told dzBB's Arnold Clavio in a text message that Navarro was rushed to a hospital and may undergo an operation.
Langit's text message cited initial details indicating Navarro was shot near his house.
Aliw Broadcasting Corp., which runs dwIZ, condemned the shooting of Navarro, who it said is now at the intensive care unit of the Pangasinan Medical Center.
It quoted dwIZ Dagupan anchor Susan Yadao as saying Navarro was talking to a tricycle driver near his house when he felt something heavy in his chest. It turned out he had been shot.
The statement said no sound was heard, but the gunman was seen fleeing from the scene.
Aliw Broadcasting described Navarro as a "hard-hitting commentator" who had criticized Dagupan City's mayor and chief of police.
It asked the Philippine National Police to make sure there would be no whitewash in the investigation.
Also, it noted at least 26 media practitioners had been killed during the watch of President Benigno Aquino III. — Joel Locsin/KG/RSJ, GMA News
