Mayon quiets down, but eruption still imminent
Restive Mount Mayon seems to have quieted down, but this may only be a prelude to a full-blown eruption, state volcanologists warned Monday.
According to live a report on GMA News TV's Unang Balita early Monday morning, August 22, Phivolcs has noted fewer volcanic events over the past 24 hours.
"Base sa obserbasyon ng Phivolcs, kumukonti ang natatala nilang aktibidad dito sa Bulkang Mayon pero hindi daw ito indikasyon na humuhupa na ang banta ng pagputok nito. Posible raw na nag-iipon lang ng pressure ang bulkan," Isay Reyes reported.
Phivolcs' 8 a.m. bulletin reported three volcanic quakes and 13 rockfall events over the previous 24 hours. No crater glow was observed, although "weak to moderate" steam plume emissions had been observed.
"All the above data indicate that the volcano is exhibiting relatively high unrest due to the movement of potentially eruptible magma," Phivolcs warned.
Mayon Volcano is now at Alert Level 3, warning that a hazardous eruption is possible "within weeks." — TJ Dimacali, GMA News
