Tricycle driver arrested for UPLB coed's rape

Police in Laguna arrested after midnight Thursday a tricycle driver for the rape of a student of the University of the Philippines Los Baños Wednesday night.

Laguna police chief Senior Superintendent Florendo Saligao told dzBB radio the suspect was arrested at 12:45 a.m. Friday.

Saligao said the suspect was arrested at the house of his aunt in Calauan in Laguna. He said the suspect did not ply his route Thursday.

But he said their suspicions were bolstered when they learned the suspect told his wife not to look for him because he was involved in a crime.

"Hindi ito nanllaban nang siya ay nahuli... sumuko rin agad siya at inamin naman niya," Saligao said.

Saligao also said the tricycle driver's wife was confined at a hospital after having given birth.

The rape occurred between 10 and 11 p.m., radio dzBB's Tuesday Niu reported earlier.

While the victim managed to get home and tell about her ordeal, her family has requested privacy, the report said.

However, the family through a lawyer is coordinating with police.
