A magnitude-5.0 quake hit the Agusan del Sur area Saturday evening, with state seismologists warning of possible damage and aftershocks.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said the quake was recorded at 6:52 p.m., and was tectonic in origin.
In its initial bulletin, Phivolcs said the quake's epicenter was traced to 10 km southeast of Talacogon in Agusan del Sur.
Phivolcs said the quake was felt at:
- Intensity V: Talacogon, Agusan del Sur
- Intensity IV: La Paz, Agusan del Sur
- Intensity III: Bayugan City; San Fransisco, Agusan del Sur
- Intensity II: Butuan City
An Intensity V quake is "strong" and generally felt by most people indoors and outdoors.
"Many sleeping people are awakened. Some are frightened, some run outdoors. Strong shaking and rocking felt throughout building. Hanging objects swing violently. Dining utensils clatter and clink; some are broken. Small, light and unstable objects may fall or overturn. Liquids spill from filled open containers. Standing vehicles rock noticeably," Phivolcs said.
Damage and aftershocks are expected, Phivolcs said. — Joel Locsin/JDS, GMA News
