Ormoc flash flood 23 years ago remembered
Residents of Ormoc City in Leyte gathered Wednesday to commemorate the 23rd anniversary of the tragedy where flash floods killed more than 5,000 people.
The residents marked the anniversary with a march to the mass grave where the victims were buried, according to a report on "Saksi" Wednesday night.
Among the activities held there were a Mass, a program and a lightning of candles at Anilao River.
The flash flood occurred in the wake of Typhoon Uring, sumberging some areas by as much as three meters, according to a paper of the Environmental Science for Social Change.
In four hours, several rivers in the eastern and western plains of Leyte were flooded - with Ormoc City south to Baybay town suffering greatest damage.
In Ormoc City alone, at least 4,000 residents were killed while 3,000 were injured and 2,500 were reported missing. — Joel Locsin/ELR, GMA News
