(Updated 3:54 p.m.) Early morning traffic was slowed down at a street in Cebu City Tuesday after a taxi caught fire there.

No one was initially reported injured in the fire at Escario Street, GMA Cebu's Gregy Magdadaro reported.

The fire quickly razed the "Emerson" taxi (GXS-281).

Cabbie Gilbert Vildosola, who with his passenger got out of the cab in time, said he saw smoke coming out of the engine before the car caught fire.

Emerson's Taxi officials maintained the fleet is roadworthy due to regular maintenance.

Investigators theorized the taxi's engine may have overheated, and the heat could have reached the liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) tank, triggering the fire.

Photos posted by the Cebu provincial government on its Facebook page indicated the taxi was a Cebu Emerson's taxi, whose front part was on fire.

As of 11:40 a.m., the taxi was totally burned and removed from the main road. — Joel Locsin/VC, GMA News
