Mag-6.2 quake recorded off Batanes, Phivolcs allays tsunami fears

A magnitude-6.2 quake struck off Batanes in extreme Northern Luzon before noon Friday, but the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology allayed fears of a possible tsuami.

Still, Phivolcs director Renato Solidum Jr. said aftershocks are possible following the quake that was recorded at 11:29 a.m.

"Ito malayo sa kalupaan ... ito ay hindi dudulot ng tsunami dahil di malakas yan," he said in an interview on dzBB radio.
Phivolcs' initial bulletin said the quake's epicenter was about 214 km southwest of Itbayat in Batanes.

It was felt at Intensity III in Calayan Island. No damage was expected. — Joel Locsin/VC, GMA NEws
