Sinkhole discovered in Cebu amid heavy rain from TD Queenie
A sinkhole was discovered in Badian town in Cebu province Thursday morning, amid heavy rain from Tropical Cyclone Queenie.
In a post on its Facebook account Friday, the provincial government cited initial information indicating the sinkhole was 10 to 15 meters deep.
The sinkhole was located in Sitio Kurbada in Barangay Banhigan in Badian, it added.
Personnel from the Mines and Geosciences Bureau who were in the barangay to check landslide-prone areas confirmed the reports.
Citing initial information, the provincial government said locals heard a loud sound in the area before discovering the sinkhole.
On Thursday, heavy rain from Tropical Depression Queenie fell on parts of Cebu and other areas in the Visayas and Mindanao.
Queenie has since intensified into a tropical storm, but is expected to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility Friday night.
Loud sound
The provincial government said the sinkhole did not cause damage or injuries.
But barangay captain Toting Caballero instructed police to put yellow tapes around the area to prevent onlookers from viewing the sinkhole and figuring in accidents. — Joel Locsin/LBG, GMA News
