Quezon evacuates citizens ahead of strong winds, pattering rain

Families from coastal barangays around Macalelon, Quezon have begun to evacuate as strong winds and light rains washed over the municipality ahead of Typhoon Ruby (Hagupit).

Other evacuees have also taken their belongings with them as damages from Typhoon Glenda last July still persist in areas around the municipality, GMA News TV's "Balitanghali" reported Saturday.

Mayor Nelson Traje said a forced evacuation took place at 12 p.m. in Macalelon and other areas in Quezon on Saturday.

Boats and livestock were taken to safe areas away from coasts, while houses and items were tied down to protect them from strong winds.

A report from the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) indicated that Buenavista and a nearby town in Quezon had no electricity.

It also urged citizens from Dolores near Mount Banahaw to evacuate due to possible landslides.

Three died after the storm passed through Quezon, which was placed under a state of calamity due to damage incurred from Glenda.

"Balitanghali" reported that compensation has only been given now to families who were affected by the storm, though local government units insist the delay was due to stringent rules by the Commission on Audit (COA). — Rie Takumi/VC, GMA News
