WATCH: 48,000 flee from Typhoon Ruby in Tacloban City

Evacuees reached 48,000 people in 81 evacuation centers in Tacloban City, Leyte 15 hours after Typhoon Ruby (Hagupit) made its landfall in the province last night.

The typhoon rampaged throughout the evening, causing knee-deep floods and downing electrical posts and signage that obstructed the roads until noon, according to a report by Balitanghali.

Branches of trees were blown away, while glass doors and windows of establishments were shattered at the force of the winds.

Evacuees feared that Ruby might cause the same devastation as supertyphoon Yolanda, which left tens of thousands dead and the whole city ravaged just a year ago.

Authorities refused to allow the people to go back to their homes with strong winds still blowing due to the slow movement of the typhoon.

As of 10 a.m., the City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council declared zero-casualty in Tacloban. —Marisse Panaligan/NB, GMA News
