Taxi hits, kills 14-year-old in Iloilo

A speeding taxi struck and killed a 14-year-old boy in Iloilo City's Jaro district last weekend.

The accident occurred at about 6 p.m. Saturday in Dungon-B area in Jaro district, GMA Iloilo's Alessa Quimsing reported Tuesday.

Killed in the accident was Stephen Joseph Palma, a resident of Westwoods Subdivision in Dungon-C.

Cabbie Jomar Valencia, 27, admitted he was speeding as he was in the fast lane.

An investigation showed he had just overtaken another vehicle and could not get back to his lane in time.

Valencia is now detained at the Jaro police station.

"Umatras siguro ang bata dahil baka tatawid sana. Naghigh-beam yung nakasalubong ko... Papunta siya ng Westwoods ako papuntang Pavia. Pag-high beam niya, baka umatras yung bata dahil ako straight yung takbo ko sa fast lane. Sinubukan kung i-drive subalit naabot ko siya Ma'am," said Valencia. — Joel Locsin/LBG, GMA News
