After Yolanda damage, iconic Tacloban church gets rededication
An iconic church devastated by super Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) in 2013 was finally rededicated on Christmas Eve, the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines said Friday.
In a post on its news site, the CBCP said Palo Archbishop John Du rededicated the Santo Niño Church by blessing it and leading a concelebrated Mass there last Dec. 24.
Sto. Niño Church was temporarily closed after Yolanda battered the Visayas and parts of southern Luzon in November 2013, leaving more than 6,300 dead.
On the eve of Yolanda's devastation, the church had served as an evacuation center for parishioners, the CBCP said.
Helping the campaign to repair the church was the Tzu Chi Taiwan Buddhist Foundation One. The foundation shouldered more than half of the P64-million cost for repair and rehabilitation.
According to the CBCP, the amount covered the repair of the rectory and the installation of sound and lighting systems, and a state-of-the-art fence. — Joel Locsin/JST, GMA News
