Kiram brother who led 2013 Sabah standoff dies at 74

Raja Muda Agbimuddin Kiram, brother of the late Sultan Jamalul Kiram III, and who led a group of Filipinos into Sabah in 2013, has died.

Kiram died Tuesday in Tawi-Tawi in Mindanao, radio dzBB's Manny Vargas reported, citing information from Sulu Sultanate spokesman Abraham Idjirani.

Agbimuddin had led the sultan's followers into Lahad Datu in early 2013, and engaged Malaysian security forces in a standoff.

But the standoff escalated into bloody clashes that prompted Malaysian security forces to assault the Kiram followers.

Sultan J. Kiram III died in October 2013.

A separate report on Malaysia's The Star Online quoted Philippine intelligence sources as saying Agbimuddin was 74, and died of cardiac arrest at his home in Simunul.

The Star Online said Malaysian police arrested 184 people and charged 31 with criminal offenses, including waging war against the King.  — Joel Locsin/LBG, GMA News
