2 hurt, 2,000 homeless in Davao City fire

At least two persons were injured and more than 2,000 families were rendered homeless after a three-hour fire destroyed their houses in Davao City Sunday night. Radio dzBB reported Monday morning that the fire, which started at 6:46 p.m. at Barangay (village) 31-E, spread to neighboring villages 76-A and 21 before firefighters put it out. But firefighters remained puzzled over the damage to property and over how the fire started, as witnesses gave conflicting accounts of what happened. Some residents said the fire started at a boardinghouse where a gas lamp left unattended fell to the ground and started the fire. Others said the fire started at a house where a couple was arguing, and left their cooking unattended. Arson investigators said they are still trying to come up with an estimate of the damage to property caused by the fire. Meanwhile, the Davao City government ordered its social development office to provide assistance to the victims. - GMANews.TV
