5 hospitalized after eating snail dish in Ilocos Norte

Five residents of Piddig town in Ilocos Norte were hospitalized after eating a dish made from snails at a birthday party on Thursday.

The residents said they felt sick after eating bagoong made from birabid or small snails at a birthday party, GMA Ilocos reported Friday.

"Sumuka ako, pagkatapos nanginginig na kalamnan ko, hindi ko makontrol ang sarili ko, talagang hindi ako makatayo," said Leonardo Silvania, one of the victims.

Another victim, Gabriel Adriano, said he suspected the birabid to be the cause of their condition.

An investigation showed the birabid was bought from the local market.

The doctor who treated the five said there were signs of food poisoning, though the victims' condition had since stabilized.

"Considered na food poisoning ito kasi yung kinain nila na birabid," said Dr. Roger Braceros of the Gov. Roque Ablan Sr. Memorial Hospital. — Joel Locsin/LBG, GMA News
