Pangasinan town to limit use of plastic bags to prevent flooding

A Pangasinan town is planning to cut down on the use of plastic bags in markets to prevent flooding due to clogged drainage systems.

This early, some vendors have started shunning the use of such bags, GMA Dagupan's Glam Calicdan reported on "Primera Balita."

"Malaki ang ginugugol natin sa pag-rehabilitate ng ating drainage system. We are spending a lot of our resources for the protection, preservation and conservation of our environment," said Vice Mayor Melicio Patague II.

Several buyers such as Aida Corpuz are open to the idea. "Mas mabuti yung bayong," Corpuz said.

The ordinance is still in the first reading stage, though some vendors at the market have started using paper bags for popcorn and paper cups for fries.

"Mas maganda kasi ang ganyan na lang, paper bag po. Kesa kasi plastic," lechon vendor Jefferson dela Rosa said.

But others are not quite keen on using alternatives such as paper bags.

"Ang papel may tinta, hindi maganda, mas maganda ang plastic," meat vendor Gloria Fernandez said.

Local officials will hold public consultations on the matter.  — Joel Locsin/LBG, GMA News
