Cagayan de Oro officials eye space-age tech in preparing food during calamities
Disaster management and food research officials in Cagayan de Oro City are eyeing space-age technology in preparing food for victims of calamities.
The officials met last week with US-based Filipino scientist Apollo Arquiza to discuss the matter, GMA Northern Mindanao's Cassy Rosos reported.
Arquiza is working with NASA's space food studies, and has worked on advanced cookware and techniques for food preparation.
Some of his work may eventually be incorporated into the Mars space mission in 2030.
Also meeting with Arquiza were representatives of the Food Nutrition Research Institute in Region 10.
The FNRI is exploring what local food products could be used to develop as food assistance in case of calamities.
These prospective food products are being eyed to possibly replace instant noodles and canned goods as primary relief items.
Arquiza said they hope to eventually make the Philippines benefit from the technologies he is working on. — Joel Locsin/LBG, GMA News
