Iloilo City gets P1B for projects for 2015; ICC work enters 2nd phase

Iloilo City will benefit from some P1 billion in infrastructure projects for 2015 even as work continues on the Iloilo Convention Center (ICC) in time for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation activities there.

Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Rogelio Singson said the P1 billion covers 73 projects—including six tourism projects—aimed at attracting more investors and tourists.

He said the 73 include:

  • six tourism road projects;
  • three road rehabilitation projects;
  • 13 construction and maintenance of flood control and drainage infrastructure projects;
  • six road widening projects;
  • seven bridge projects; and
  • 38 projects under the local infrastructure program (LIP).

For his part, DPWH Western Visayas director Edilberto Tayao said construction work on the ICC Phase II started last March 2 and will be completed in July.

Singson ordered the ICC contractor to fast-track the work in time for the city's hosting of two Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation meetings in September and October.

The ICC project was rocked by controversy in 2014, when Senate President Franklin Drilon was accused by his former staffmember, ex-Iloilo Provincial Administrator Manuel Mejorada, of involvement in alleged overpricing of the convention center—Joel Locsin/KG, GMA News
