Feeding program in Yolanda-hit Palo, Leyte to start Maundy Thursday
On Maundy Thursday, Catholic Church officials in Leyte will start a feeding program for the poor in an area hit hard by super Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) in 2013.
Palo Archbishop John Du initiated the feeding program dubbed "La Mesa ni Marta (Table of Martha)," the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines said.
The CBCP news site said the program will be launched during the Mass of Our Lord’s Last Supper with His Disciples.
It said the project was thus named after Martha, who in the Gospel was very busy serving Jesus Christ.
Palo archdiocese social communications director Fr. Amadeo Alvero said this means "the Church must also be busy serving the Lord.”
Good Friday
Meanwhile, a Seven Last Words reflection will be held on Good Friday inside the Sto. Niño church—the first time in about a decade.
The CBCP said the parish would previously broadcast the Siete Palabras reflection held at the Palo Cathedral of The Transfiguration of Our Lord.
House-to-house blessing
Other activities include a house-to-house blessing in parochial districts including Siren, Seawall, Sabang, Quarry and Pampango.
These areas were hit by Yolanda’s storm surge. Yolanda left more than 6,300 dead after devastating the Visayas in November 2013.
The CBCP noted the parish and the Basic Ecclesial Communities started house-to-house visits for evangelization in September 2013, but this was disrupted by Yolanda. —Joel Locsin/KG, GMA News
