One-way traffic to Baguio City on Kennon Road starting March 31 to midnight of April 3
Starting Tuesday, March 31, traffic along Kennon Road will be one-way going up to Baguio City to benefit tourists heading there this Holy Week, the Department of Public Works and Highways has said.
In a post on its website, the DPWH said the scheme, which aims to shorten travel time to Baguio City, starts at midnight on March 31 and ends midnight of April 3.
"The one-way traffic scheme would start from the Camp 1 Toll Gate at Tuba, Benguet, up to the Camp 7 Police Station (View Deck), Baguio City, and will be implemented from midnight of March 31, 2015 to midnight of April 3, 2015," it said.
DPWH Secretary Rogelio Singson instructed Cordillera regional director Edilberto Carabbacan to implement the "experimental" scheme.
Window period
Residents on Kennon Road will have window times from 11 a.m. to noon and 5 to 6 p.m. to go down Kennon Road.
Special passes shall be issued to vehicles of certified Kennon residents during this time.
Billboards informing motorists of the one-way scheme along with the window times have been installed at locations from Saytan, Rosario, to Baguio City.
Flagmen are assigned every 500 meters from Camp 1 to Camp 7 to caution motorists. Flyers will be distributed to motorists to warn them of the traffic scheme.
In the flyers, however, the times indicated will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m., to allow enough time for the last vehicle entering the Camp 7 Police Station to exit the Toll Gate at Camp 1.
Lakbay Alalay
Meanwhile, the DPWH Cordillera regional Office and Baguio and Benguet district engineering offices were directed to activate composite teams for the “Lakbay Alalay” motorist assistance program.
Under the program, personnel and mechanics are to respond to emergencies and accidents and to assist travelers. —Joel Locsin/NB, GMA News
