Killed was Joseph Padilla, while the driver of the other motorcycle, laborer Ericson Velasquez, was in critical condition.

Police said their initial findings showed both drivers were not wearing helmets, and may have been under the influence of alcohol.

But Velasquez's wife Jevie said her husband was careful in driving and does not drink too much.

"Sharp curve po kasi 'yun so talagang accident-prone po 'yun," added Mangaldan police head Superintendent Jackie Candelario.

In Burgos town in La Union, 13 passengers were injured after the bus they were riding figured in an accident along Naguilian Road.

The bus had come from Baguio City and was heading for Candon City in Ilocos Sur. Five of the victims were seriously injured.

Investigation showed the bus' brakes may have failed.

Hit-and-run

Meanwhile, in Malasiqui in Pangasinan, farmer Narciso Cuizon was injured after being victimized in a hit-and-run incident in Barangay Tambac.

Cuizon suffered a broken leg and wounds in several parts of the body.

But police are verifying information the victim may have been drunk when he crossed the road.
