WATCH: PUVs violate traffic rules in Urdaneta and Dagupan

Many public utility vehicle drivers are giving traffic officials - and motorists and commuters - a headache in Urdaneta and Dagupan Cities in Pangasinan.

These drivers' disregard of traffic rules have disrupted traffic in many roads in these two cities, GMA Dagupan's Joanne Ponsoy reported on "24 Oras North Central Luzon."

In Urdaneta City, about half of the 70 traffic violations recorded daily by the city's Public Order and Safety Office (POSO) are by tricycle drivers not in their lanes.

While the city imposed a policy assigning a lane for tricycles last March, authorities had a difficult time enforcing it.

"Yung tricycle lane namin pero marami pa rin ang pasaway... Maraming pasaway at iba mga tricycle sa ibang bayan na napupunta rito na di alam ang traffic," said Urdaneta POSO chief Engineer Johnny Sumait.

Some tricycle drivers also do not follow a policy banning tricycles from some streets at certain hours.

In Dagupan City, many traffic violations were also committed by drivers of public utility vehicles. Some 2,000 violations had been recorded there from January to April 2015.

Eric Fernandez, deputy of the POSO in Dagupan, said it may be time to raise the penalties for violations.

"Kung sa ... patataasin ang violation siguro titino ang mga yan. Kung penalty P100 madali lang, isang ikot kuha ang P100," he said.

Among the top traffic violations in the city were violations of loading and unloading rules; failure to obey traffic signs; and disregard for No Parking and One-Way signs. — Joel Locsin/LBG, GMA News
