Mag-5.1 quake hits Albay in Bicol region


A magnitude-5.1 quake hit Albay province in Bicol shortly before midnight Thursday, with the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology warning of possible aftershocks.

Phivolcs said the quake was recorded at 11:55 p.m. Wednesday, with the epicenter at 18 km northeast of Rapu-Rapu in Albay.

Its initial bulletin said the quake was tectonic in origin, and was felt at:

Intensity III: Prieto Diaz, Sorsogon; Legazpi City
Intensity II: Sorsogon City

While Phivolcs said it does not expect damage from the quake, aftershocks are possible.

Second quake

Meanwhile, another quake in the area, this time measuring magnitude 4.7, was recorded at 1 a.m. Thursday.

The epicenter was at 21 km southeast of Rapu-rapu in Albay, but no damage or aftershock was expected. — Joel Locsin/LBG, GMA News
