UP Baguio chancellor gets 2nd term, outlines program for next 3 years

The University of the Philippines Board of Regents has approved a second term for Dr. Raymundo Rovillos as chancellor of UP's Baguio campus.

Rovillos, whose new term was effective April 14 and will last up to April 30, 2018, has drawn up plans for the next three years, UP Baguio said.

"During his first term of office, Dr. Rovillos sought to address various university concerns within the framework of UP Baguio’s mandate as an arts and sciences constituent unit of UP," it added.

Also, it said the Cordillera Studies Center’s research direction "was re-defined to focus on what was deemed as priority areas of inquiry" that include:

- biodiversity and resource management
- governance and public policy
- material culture
- climate change
- local languages and literature
- sustainability science

Also, the Knowledge and Training Resource Center for Climate Change Adaptation and Disaster Risk Reduction was institutionalized as a response to the public's clamor for immediate response to the effects of climate change.

Rovillos also urged the institutionalization of the Graduate Program Office to "coordinate and enhance post-graduate studies in the university," UP Baguio said.

Next 3 years

For the next three years, Rovillos said additional academic programs are in the offing, including graduate degree programs in Physics and doctorate programs in Mathematics and Indigenous Studies.

“This will reinforce and securely position UP Baguio’s niche in indigenous studies and sustainability science,” he said.

Also, the university is being readied for the effects of the K to 12 program and internationalization.

It said its general education curriculum is being reviewed to address the effects of two additional years in basic education.

"Curriculum reviews are likewise being undertaken to fit current programs into global requirements, yet at the same time ensure that these are responsive to the needs of the nation," it added.

Green infrastructure projects

Targeted for completion are:

- Cordillera Ethnographic Museum
- Science laboratories
- theatre at the College of Arts and Communication
- renovation of the Bulwagang Juan Luna
- construction of the Balay International.

Rovillos is a professor of History and earned a doctorate in History degree from UP Diliman.

He is also a member of the Board of the Baguio Heritage Foundation.

He served as dean of the College of Social Sciences of UP Baguio from June 2006 to March 2012, and was feted by the Baguio City National High School as Outstanding Alumnus for Excellence in Tertiary Education Management in 2014.

In 2013, he was awarded by the World Education Congress for Outstanding Contribution to Education. — Joel Locsin/LBG, GMA News
