1 dead, 3 injured as 18-wheeler truck crashes on SLEX

A porter was killed and three others were injured when an 18-wheeler cargo truck crashed on the South Luzon Expressway on Monday afternoon after a sudden downpour made the road slippery.

The accident happened at kilometer 34 on the northbound side of SLEX along Biñan, Laguna at around 2 p.m.

SLEX traffic officers who responded to the accident had trouble rescuing the passengers because the truck had crashed on its side and the trailer was blocking access to the cab.

Those injured were brought to a nearby hospital, as was the porter who died.

Jhundel Paraz, who was driving the truck, sustained only minor injuries. He said that the vehicle in front of him was moving too slwoly and that he had to make a sudden stop to keep from hitting it. He said that was when the container loaded with frozen fries tilted and hit the the truck.

Paraz said he did not know the name of his companion who died from the accident but apologized to the family just the same.

Paraz may face complaints of reckless imprudence for the death of the porter and for damage to property, SLEX traffic supervisor Ezer Nicolas said. He added the truck driver could have been speeding when the accident occurred.

He was brought to the Philippine National Police Highway Patrol Group, which will investigate the accident. — JDS, GMA News
