Nail found in puto prompts probe by Pangasinan authorities

Authorities are tracking down a vendor in Dagupan City in Pangasinan for allegedly selling a piece of puto (steamed rice cake) "fortified" with iron.

The iron inside the puto, however, may do more harm than good because it was a rusty two-inch nail, GMA Dagupan's Joyce Segui reported Friday.

"Kinagat ko, ulo ng pako ang nakita ko. Ang laki-laki," said Conchita Diocares, 76, a fellow ambulant vendor of Barangay Malued who bought the puto for P10.

A separate report on GMA News TV' Balita Pilipinas Ngayon quoted Diocares as saying she will recognize the vendor who sold her the puto when she sees her again.

Diocares said she reported the matter to her barangay, which is now trying to find out who sold the puto and where it was made.

For its part, the City Health Office said whoever cooked the puto with the nail violated sanitation regulations.

City health officer Dr. Leonard Carbonell said the nail could have caused injuries.

He urged Diocares to lodge a formal complaint with his office, adding his office will conduct an inspection once authorities trace the source of the puto.

"Puntahan, check yung sanitary, business permit, ipapa-explain why may foreign objects sa product nila," he said. — Joel Locsin/JDS, GMA News
