Is it edible? Styrofoam-like rice puzzles Davao City family
Authorities will have to test rice bought from a store in Davao City to see if it is safe to eat, especially after the rice resembled styrofoam when cooked.
The family of trader Carmencita Griño sought assistance from GMA Davao, after they bought the rice from a store in the city.
While the rice looked like normal white rice when cooked, it felt like foam when held and squeezed.
NFA Region 11 assistant manager Ma. Elaine Respicia said a laboratory analysis of the rice, to determine if it is synthetic, may take about three days.
When GMA News asked the Department of Health and Food and Drug Administration if the rice was edible, representatives of both agencies said they need to analyze a sample first.
The DOH and FDA also said Griño has to file a formal complaint before they can analyze the samples.
But Respicia advised consumers not to eat the rice if they doubt if it is edible.
The owner of the store that sold the rice has yet to comment on the matter. — Joel Locsin/JDS, GMA News
