Ten hurt as storm surge hits Ilocos Norte

A storm surge destroyed five houses and injured 10 residents in Brgy. San Pedro in Narvacan, Ilocos Sur on Monday before dawn, a report from GMA's “State of the Nation” said Wednesday.

According to the report, the 10-foot-high storm surge broke through and reached the houses after the seawall collapsed around 2 a.m.

The waters caused the house's foundations to be weakend and ultimately destroyed.

“Sana bigyan ng pansin itong tabing dagat para 'yung mga nakatira dito wala nang pangamba lalo na sa pagtulog sa gabi,” resident Mark Collado said.

Other residents claim that this was the first time they saw such a storm surge that actually reached their houses.

“Tignan mo 'yung tubig talagang malakas. Nakita ko lahat ng mga bahay dito na babagsak talaga,” resident Benjamin Cuello said.

The residents voluntarily evacuated their homes and refused to return unless the collapsed sea wall is repaired.

The destructive storm surge came a day before Tropical Storm Egay left the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Tuesday morning. Andrei Medina/NB, GMA News
