Residents near Pangasinan river fear for safety amid damaged dike

Residents near a river in Sta. Barbara town in Pangasinan fear for their safety after a portion of a dike was damaged after days of heavy rain.

While cracks were initially seen at a part of the dike in Barangay Maninding, a portion of the embankment had given way, GMA Dagupan's Alfie Tulagan reported.

The residents believe this was partly due to heavy rain in past weeks and to the strong current of the Sinocalan River.

While the residents have yet to evacuate their homes, they remain on alert if the need arises.

For its part, the local government has asked the Department of Public Works and Highways to investigate the matter. The DPWH said it has inspected the area. — Joel Locsin/LBG, GMA News
