Teen beauty queen dies allegedly due to slimming pills

Slimming pills allegedly lead to the death of a 19-year-old beauty queen in Zamboanga del Norte days after the teen started taking them, GMA's "24 Oras" reported Thursday.

Maan Acedo took the pills four times a day for four days when she experienced diarrhea and bleeding, according to her mother Mary Jane.

Acedo was rushed to the hospital after the bleeding led to stomach pains and died three days later due to multiple organ failure.

Her mother said they took down the drug's tracking number in an attempt to bring justice to her death.

"Maano talaga kung ano ang dapat naming gawin so kinuha namin yung tracking number (ng gamot). Gusto po talaga namin na malutas, (maghanap) ng hustisya," Mary Jane said.

According to a drug store in Binondo, the slimming capsules cost P650, though similar drugs cost P250 per 10 tablets and had an added whitening effect.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is currently investigating the incident in Zamboanga.
