Death toll from Bukidnon flash flood rises to 7; two remain missing


(Updated 6:05 p.m.) The death toll from flash floods that struck Valencia City in Bukidnon has risen to seven, while two other people have remained missing.

Citing an update from the city's disaster risk reduction and management office, a report on "Unang Balita" on Thursday morning also said five barangays have been affected by floods from continuous heavy rain due to the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat).

The victims attempted to cross the swollen creek and were swept away by floodwater, the report said.

It said the Panlibatuha Creek overflowed, sending rampaging floodwater to affected areas.

Barangay Poblacion has been hit hardest by the flood, with one house destroyed when the ground of a riverbank caved in.

In its bulletin on Wednesday, the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council indicated that five people were killed while three others were missing due to the flash flood.

RDRRMC Region 10 reported fatalities were mostly children from Valencia City, including a six-month-old baby.
 
The fatalities were initially identified as:
  •     Baby Rose Batistil, nine years old
  •     Lea Luzano, seven years old
  •     Jelove Badoy, six years old
  •     Gina Eroisa
  •     Baby Eroisa, six months old.

Those missing were:
  •     Bobsky Batisil, seven years old
  •     Eddie Eroisa
  •     Epefanio Canyamu, 23 years old.

Meanwhile, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said a total of 426 families or 1,085 people were also affected in the cities of Valencia and Malaybalay in the province of Bukidnon.
 
Of the number, 372 families or 880 individuals were evacuated.
 
According to the NDRRMC, the local government unit of Valencia City provided financial assistance amounting to P10,000 each to the bereaved family of the dead victims. — with Kathrina Charmaine Alvarez/LBG/KG/RSJ, GMA News
