Red tide gone from two bays in Western Samar but still in Bohol, Davao, Masbate

Two bays in Western Samar were declared free of toxic red tide over the weekend enabling fishermen at Irong-Irong Bay and Cambatutay Bay to resume their seafaring livelihood.

Director Asis Perez of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) said these Western Samar bays were red tide free, but not Balite Bay in Mati, Davao Oriental and also not the coastal waters of Dauis in Bohol and of Milagros in Masbate—which are all still positive for the paralytic shellfish poison.

The BFAR director reiterated previous reminders that fish, squids, shrimps, and crabs in waters with red tide “are safe for human consumption provided that they are fresh and washed thoroughly, and internal organs such as gills and intestines are removed before cooking.”  — ELR, GMA News
