Albay feeling effects of Typhoon Nona
The province of Albay is bracing for the effects of Typhoon Nona, dumping heavy yet intermittent rains since Sunday night.
Residents in Guinobatan have also started panic buying for gas, anticipating a blackout at the height of the typhoon.
"Pasiguro lang po sa bahay para may pag gasera baka tumagal brownout," resident Philip Masagca told GMA News stringer Michael Jaucian.
Some residents in Camalig have also started to move to evacuation centers.
"Medyo mahirap pero okay lang basta ligtas kami sa peligro," said resident Analyn Naag.
Meanwhile in Daraga, GMA News saw a man removing the roof of his store. He said he was just making sure nobody will get hurt in case Nona's winds will blow the roof away.
Tons of garbage were also seen in a street along a boulevard in Legazpi City, which were brought by the typhoon's strong and big waves.
PAGASA has raised public storm warning signal number 3 over Albay as well as Catanduanes, Camarines Sur, Sorsogon, Masbate (including Ticao and Burias Islands), Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, and Biliran. The typhoon made landfall in Batag, Northern Samar at the same time. It is expected to make another landfall in Sorsogon on Monday afternoon.
In its 8 a.m. Monday bulletin, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said that a total of 133,905 families or 589,235 people were evacuated from flood- and landslide-prone areas in Albay.
A total of 26,972 families or 134,870 individuals, meanwhile, were evacuated from 112 barangays in Sorsogon.
The evacuations were conducted by the local governments in anticipation of Nano's devastation.
Classes in all levels in Albay, which has been placed under a "state of imminent disaster," have also been suspended. —Trisha Macas/ALG, GMA News
