5-year-old boy hero from Isabela receives award


The 5-year-old boy who rescued his grandmother from their burning house in Jones town in Isabela two years ago, was among individuals recognized in the 17th Annual Kalasag awards in Pasig City, reported Tuesday Niu for Super Radyo's dzBB on Tuesday morning.

Edmond John Nipay, a native of Isabela province, rescued his grandmother by pushing her wheelchair. Afterwhich, he returned to get her eyeglasses and cellphone so they could contact firefighters and his parents.

Nipay said that he was scared but he did not lose hope that he would be able to rescue his grandmother.

There was a brownout in the area when the fire, which could have occurred because of the sudden surge of electricity.

The award was part of the search for excellence in Disaster Risk Reduction and Management and Humanitarian Assistance held at the Chardonnay by Astoria in Pasig City on Monday. — BAP, GMA News
